History of Mariupol Theatre starts from 1878 when the first professional company directed by Shapovalov, Vasyl Leontiyovych, began to work in the city.

The art directors of the theatre in different years were the distinguished figures of theatre arts of Ukraine – People’s Artist of the USSR P. Vetrov (1960-1963s), Honoured Artist of the USSR S. Sheiko (1964-1967s), Yu.I. Kostenko (1986-1988s), V. Balkashynov (nowadays he is the Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine) (1989-1993s), N. Voloshyn (1993-1994s), A. Kotov (1996-2001s). They worked together with such excellent stage directors as: V. Kripets, People’s Artist of the USSR, A. Kozhenovskyy, G. Vogau, People’s Artist of the USSR, V. Bugayev, V. Tarshys, V. Moskovchenko (nowadays he is the Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine), with the talented artists: R. Sutormina, I. Bondarev. For many years the Honoured Artist of Ukraine M.Kovalchuk has been working as the art director of the theatre. During the last 12 years Mariupol theatre has been taking part in international and All-Ukrainian festivals of the theatre arts. The appreciation of its activity was the annual regional award “Zolotoy Skif” (“Golden Scythian”) at nomination “For Contribution into the Spiritual Education of the Region” (2000). The theatre was awarded by the diploma of the city contest “Crystal Tower” at nomination “The Enterprise to the Pensioners”. The year of 2007 undoubtedly remains in the history of Donetsk Regional Russian Drama Theatre (Mariupol) thanks to the significant event – awarding to the theatre of the status “Academic”. The winners of the city contest “Mariupol Citizen of the Year” were the art director of the theatre S. Kann, People's Artist of Ukraine S. Ostashenko, head of electrical workshop L. Arkhipov, leading stage master A. Arutiunian. The actor of the theatre Igor Kitrish became the winner of annual city contest “The Future of Mariupol - 2008” at nomination of “The Best Young Talents”. In 2008 the People's Artist of Ukraine, Honoured Artist of the RSFSR Natalya Yurgens and the theatre director Konstantin Dobrunov were awarded by the badge of honor “Silver Coat of Arms of the City”. The new building of the theater was opened on November 02, 1960 with the formal ceremony. In 2003 on the eve of the 125th anniversary of the theatre it was restored.
