Educational System in Mariupol

 The system of education in Mariupol is being developed and improved according to the acting legislative and regulatory documents about education: the Acts of Ukraine «On Education», «On General Secondary Education», the conception of the state programme of education development in  2007 – 2010, The Decree of  President of Ukraine «On Additional measures to improve the quality of education in Ukraine», municipal programmes: «Teacher», «Gifted children», «IT and distant learning».

The aim of the Programmes is to improve innovative potential of education, to implement a complex of measures to solve educational problems, to improve conditions for children upbringing, to create all the conditions for human resource development, to improve constantly quality of education at all educational stages.

There are 178 educational establishments in the city with 49,323  children in them. There are  92 preschool educational establishments with general number of  13,555 children.
71 educational establishments, among them 22 establishments of a new type, 37 schools have a status of schools with Ukrainian language of tuition work in the city in order to create the conditions to develop intellectual and physical abilities of children.
There are 17 school divisions in the city, which unite cooperation between schools, kindergartens, out-of-school establishments and higher educational establishments of І-ІV level of accreditation.

The educational process is provided by 5,017 teachers, 987 among them are specialists of the highest rank. 728 teachers have pedagogical awards. 6 Honoured teachers of Ukraine, 245 high achiever-teaches of Ukraine, 254 teachers awarded with orders, medals and  badges work at educational establishments.  
The schools of the city collaborate actively with Priazovsky State Technical University, Mariupol State University of Humanities. City thematic Olympiads are traditionally held on the base of the higher educational establishments. Research centers for pupils within Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and 49 municipal schools are included into education-science-industry complex “Priazovye”. 
Systematic exchange of delegations put into practice with Greece for the purpose of children's health improvement, participation in the Olympiads in the history and culture of Greece. 8 pupils of schools №8, 46 receive scholarship from International charity fund “Yason”.
In 2009 within the project of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine «The Schools are the Partners of the Future» Mariupol City Lyceum signed up an agreement with educational establishments of Germany.
The Programme «Gifted Children» is under realization: pupils of the city take an active part in sport competitions, contests, Olympiads, Research and Practice Conferences, intellectual marathons and win top places in mathematics, physics, chemistry, French, informatics, economics, geography. In these subjects the pupils of the city have rather high rating in the region.
For several years the best pupils have been granted scholarships.
The Scholarship of the President of Ukraine is received by 5 pupils of municipal educational establishments, 21 pupils are awarded with the Scholarship of Region Council.
From 2007 the schools of Mariupol participate in external independent assessment of the school leavers` knowledge.

One of the most important aspects of negative behaviour prevention in children and teenage sphere is their involvement in after-school activities: in clubs and sport sections.
The city actively carries out the work to involve children into sport and creativity organizations after school time. In order to make children and teenagers busy after school time there is a number of out-of-school establishments. In 2009 more than 15 thousand children and teenagers (41% of pupils) received additional education at 11 municipal out-of-school establishments. More than 8 thousand children and teenagers attend departmental municipal establishments.

The results of children involvement in after-school activities and the level of educational work show a positive dynamics of teenage delinquency decrease.


Higher Educational Establishments

In order to prepare qualified specialists for job market there is a number of educational establishments in Mariupol, they provide the people's needs in education: 3 higher educational establishments of  the І-IV levels of accreditation, 8  higher educational establishments of the І-ІІ levels of accreditation, 10 professional lyceums.

Pryazovskyi State Technical University

One of the oldest and largest higher educational establishments in the South-East of Ukraine is Pryazovskyi State Technical University (hereinafter referred to as PSTU), which is acknowledged as an educational, scientific and cultural centre of Pryazov region. PSTU includes 4 scientific-educational institutes,  4 technical secondary schools, Mariupol college, professional lyceum, 10 faculties which unite 42 departments, at which 511 teachers work, among them 41 doctors of science, professors, 218 associate professors, 47 academicians and corresponding members. There are more than 16 thousand of full time and distant students at the university. Within the last 10 years  more than 40 thousand graduates received university diplomas, among them 2 thousand foreign citizens from 48 European, Asian, African and Latin America’s countries. PSTU actively collaborates with 25 higher educational establishments of Germany, Poland, Italy, Austria, Greece, China, Egypt, Turkey, Spain, Russia. In April 2008 PSTU was awarded the title “The Leader” for the long term scientific and educational activities  and the development of higher education in Ukraine.   

Mariupol State University of Humanities

The history of Mariupol State University of Humanities (hereinafter referred to as MSUH) starts in 1991. In June 2004 Mariupol State Institute acquired the status of university.
The structure of university includes 6 faculties: philological, historical, foreign languages, economics and law, Greek philology, department of distant education.  More than 3 thousand of full time and distant students receive higher education here. More than 280 teachers work at 20 departments of the university, among them 4 academicians, 30 doctors of science, professors, 94 candidates of science, associate professors.
The higher educational establishment possesses 5 up-to-date equipped studying buildings, computer labs with Internet access, library holding with more than 140 thousand exemplars of different books. MSUH has large-scale relations, actively collaborates with educational and scientific establishments of Greece, Cyprus, Germany, Great Britain, the USA, Poland, Italy, it contributes to the integration of  MSUH into the world system of education of the European Union. Each year 150-170 students and teachers of MSUH participate in different training programmes in Austria,  Great Britain,  Greece, Netherland, the USA, Poland,  Italy,  Germany and  Cyprus.
MSUH is one of the10 higher educational establishments of the country, which signed Magna Charta Unіvеrsitatum at Bologna University. The diploma of MSUH gained international recognition, it extends the possibilities of the graduates for postgraduate education and employment. 

Azov Maritime Institute of Odessa National  Maritime Academy

The leading centre of higher maritime education in the East of Ukraine is Azov Maritime Institute of Odessa National Maritime Academy, established in 1996. The institute provides skill formation of shipboard personnel for marine and river fleet, marine enterprises and organizations of Ukraine. Since 2005 the institute is headed by a candidate of economical science, professor, corresponding member of Transport Academy of Ukraine, Europe rectors club member A.F.Lysyi. There are more than 1600 full time and distant students of three specialties: seaway ship navigation, marine transport management of organizations, ship power plants operation at the institute. The teaching is provided by 6 professors and 28 associate professors, the specialists, who have great experience of working at marine vessels (captains and senior fleet mechanics), are also involved.
